During World War I, British troops, under General Edmund Allenby, capture Jerusalem and end Ottoman control over the city. The British issue the Balfour Declaration, an official document that supports the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The League of Nations makes Palestine a "mandated territory"that is, an area administered by Britain, under the League's supervision, in preparation for self-government. The British administration, centers in Jerusalem and builds many new houses and government buildings. |

The United Nation votes to end the British mandate and divide Palestine between the Arabs and the Jews. Jerusalem will have special status: corpus separatum. |
In 1947, India and Pakistan separate and establish independent states.

Beginning of the first Arab-Israeli war, which is ended by the partition of Jerusalem: West-Jerusalem under Israeli control and East-Jerusalem under Jordanian control. After the war between Israel and some Arab countries in 1967, the whole city of Jerusalem is occupied by Israel. According to the Oslo Agreement, the final status of Jerusalem has yet to be negotiated between Israel and Palestine. |
